Against Hunger, AFAC's project in support of the national Plant a Row for the Hungry Program.
What is it?
Plant a Row for the Hungry is a nationwide
movement of gardeners and farmers who plant an extra row of vegetables
in their gardens and fields and donate the harvest to a local food bank
like the Arlington Food Assistance Center.
Since it began in 1995, the Plant a Row for the Hungry project has
inspired thousands of home gardeners, community gardeners and farmers
to grow produce for their less fortunate neighbors. By 2008, an
estimated 12 million pounds of produce were donated by Plant a Row
gardeners to local food banks.
How can
I help?
- Plant
an extra row & donate extra harvest. AFAC has free seeds available
for planting
- Extra
vegetable seedlings? Share them with our clients or with gardeners who
have pledged to plant a row
- Neighbor
going out of town and leaving the vegetables to ripen? Ask if you can
harvest them and donate them to AFAC
- Ask
your faith-based organization to be a produce drop-off site in summer
months
- Start
a Plot Against Hunger garden at your child's™ school or at your
organization
- Help
distribute brochures at area garden centers, cafes, libraries &
farmers™ markets
- Join
our market teams and pick up market-end produce at Arlington Farmers™
Markets on weekends
- Glean
fields with the Mid-Atlantic Gleaning Network & bring fresh produce
to AFAC
