VOLUNTEER NEEDS
AT AFAC
JOIN A TEAM OF DRIVERS to pick up market-end produce at the Arlington Farmers' Markets at Courthouse and Columbia Pike, around noontime on Saturdays and Sundays, June - November. Must be physically able to lift 30-40 pounds continuously and withstand summer temperatures. This is a minimum once-monthly commitment for the season. JOIN OUR PRODUCE HANDLERS TEAMS: Teams of volunteers are needed during the summer/fall months (June - November) on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, to receive donations of fresh produce, repackage and store these in our coolers. AFAC's SUMMER TEENS program begins in June. Teens (14 and older) are welcome to help at AFAC over the summer months in the warehouse, office and with grocery distribution weekday mornings, M-F, 9:30 am - 1 pm. Flexible schedule. OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: GO GLEAN FOR AFAC (GROUPS & INDIVIDUALS): Help AFAC by picking fresh vegetables and fruits from local farms and orchards. Or sort vegetables and fruits indoors. Your group can arrange to glean fields with the Mid-Atlantic Gleaning Network, one of AFAC’s local partners. Some of the produce you pick can be brought back to AFAC and a portion will go to other food banks. Contact Puwen Lee at afacpuwen@aol.com or (703) 845-8486 for information about this opportunity. GARDENER? Join AFAC's Plot Against Hunger program. Plant some tomato and pepper seedlings for AFAC clients who have gardening space and for community gardeners who are participating in our Plant a Row for the Hungry project. Have surplus vegetables over the summer months? Donate them! Start an extra row or two of vegetables and mark it "Stake Against Hunger". Start a garden in your child's school or at your faith-based organization. For information, contact Puwen Lee at afacpuwen@aol.com. Seeds available. HOLD A FOOD DRIVE. Why wait for our annual food drives hold one of your own! Over 60% of the food AFAC receives is donated to us. This is a great opportunity for students, schools and other organizations to get involved in the essential work of AFAC throughout the year. We also need re-usable brown grocery bags. Contact Magda Jaskot, Food Drive Coordinator at AFAC for more information, afacmagda@aol.com, (703) 845-8486. HAVE A CLEANING BLAST: Claim a Saturday afternoon for your group to help AFAC behind-the-scenes. These once/monthly cleaning events might include cleaning rugs, washing windows, cleaning coolers, vacuuming our vans, washing waiting room chairs, scrubbing and painting walls, shampooing carpets. A clean AFAC means staff can better serve our clients. Contact Puwen Lee at volunteer4afac@aol.com to set up an afternoon cleaning opportunity. Cleaning crew needed on Saturday, June 13. To
register or receive further information about these opportunities,
please contact our Volunteer Department
