Go Glean for AFAC
Help AFAC by picking fresh vegetables and fruits from local farms and
orchards. On rainy days, sort vegetables and fruits indoors. Individuals, families and groups
of all kinds enjoy participating. There are a great number of people in need of
food assistance these days. Obtaining fresh produce is a great source of fresh
donations as well as a much-needed source of good nutrition.
Gleaning takes place every Saturday morning at local farms, beginning July 14th and ending November 3. AFAC gleans at several farms, two of which are located around 45 minutes from Arlington. Miller Farm is available for gleaning every Saturday from 9-12 (Fridays can also be arranged - please contact us separately if you are interested). Gleaning at USDA takes place on specific dates.
Individuals can register to glean by completing the Volunteer Profile form. If you are already part of our online volunteer management system, you do not need to register. You will see gleaning opportunities on the online calendar.
A group leader can register to glean by completing the group profile form using the link here - group gleaning form.
You are also invited to glean at Volunteer Farm in Woodstock, VA, about an hour and 45 minutes away. AFAC does not coordinate gleaning there, but you can contact them directly at http://volunteer.truist.com/acvo/org/opp/10348886693.html and offer your help. They are in continuous need of gleaners.
About a week before you are due to glean, you will receive a reminder from one of us at AFAC. Please note that due to inclement weather or muddy roads, gleaning may be cancelled. Please check your email before you head out.
Contact Danielle Rampton at danielle.rampton@afac.org or (703) 845-8486 for information about gleaning.
