Current Needs

Farmers' Market Drivers Needed

AFAC receives 1000s of pounds of beautiful produce donated by the farmers at the local farmers' markets. Our clients really appreciate receiving such fresh, healthy food. We are looking for drivers and helpers for these important pick-ups.

Job Description:
A driver and helper will meet at AFAC to load the AFAC van with crates and rolling bins. After driving to the farmers' market just before the market closes, you will deliver the crates to the various vendors that support AFAC. When the market closes, you'll pick up the crates, load the van and return to AFAC. Volunteers will be at AFAC to help unload and weigh in the food.

Job Requirements:
Drivers and helpers should be able to lift 30-40 pounds continuously and withstand summer temperatures. Minimum twice-a-month commitment for May - November preferred. In order to qualify as a driver, drivers must interview with AFAC staff and provide a copy of drivers license and DMV record. Contact us at laura.jackson@afac.org for information.

Supervisors needed for Weekend Produce Bagging

If you want to help ensure that our clients have access to fresh, healthy produce, this is a great volunteer opportunity for you.

AFAC is looking for people willing to supervise other volunteers as they bag produce on weekend afternoons. AFAC receives 1000s of pounds of beautiful produce donated by local farmers markets. Volunteers unload the produce from the van as it arrives, refresh and clean it, and then bag it for distribution to AFAC's 1,400 client families.

We are looking for volunteers who can make a commitment to help 1-2 times per month from May-December. Supervisor hours are noon-2:30 on Saturday or 1-3:30 on Sunday. Supervisors should be comfortable directing other volunteers. Training will be provided. For more information, contact Laura Jackson at laura.jackson@afac.org.

Neighborhood Civic Associations

Do you live in the Arlington View, Arlingwood, Ballston-Virginia Square, Bluemont, or Buckingham neighborhoods? We'd like to invite you to join an informal group of volunteers who would be willing to post items in your civic association newsletter or list serve, maybe put up a few posters advertising our larger food drives, and serve as a point of contact for other volunteers in your immediate area.  This last item is super helpful for our Stamp Out Hunger food drive in May, when we ask volunteers to put leaflets out in the neighborhoods to encourage as much participation as possible. Email volunteer4afac@afac.org for more information.

Evening Chicken Bagging

Chicken bagging, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Wednesday of each month (no bagging on May 29), starting promptly at 6:30 pm and typically ending around 7:30pm. Bulk chicken is purchased at wholesale prices and is re-bagged for our clients at AFAC.  Wear your old duds and we provide aprons and gloves. These are drop-in nights so you can show up any Wednesday that works for you or sign up using our online calendar. Groups of 3 or more must register by emailing volunteer4afac@afac.org. Volunteers should be 12+ years old.
